This boot easily keeps up with outdoor activities such as yard work, gardening, and even light chores on the ranch. I’m impressed with the fully waterproof body that’s made with vulcanized rubber, effectively sealing out mud, rain, and other liquids, enabling me to enjoy a completely dry foot feeling when I needed to walk over extremely wet ground conditions. It may not be as tall as other Wellingtons, but this boot still managed to keep the wet elements out, protecting my foot from getting completely soaked. The twin gussets work great for an easy boot on and off, stretching to accommodate my foot each time so I didn’t need to exert a lot of effort just to pull on or remove my footwear.
I gave plus points to the pull loops built into the front and back parts of the boot’s opening as these offered even more convenience for putting on and taking off the boot, without needing to pull on the rubber parts. As it’s built for use outdoors, I wasn’t expecting a lot with this boot’s aesthetic, but I’m pleased with how it turned out to be sleeker than I anticipated, resulting in a silhouette that didn’t have the excessive bulkiness that’s associated with rubber boots. The rubber outsole delivered an impressive grip on different surfaces, making me feel a lot safer while walking over tricky surface conditions. I wasn’t expecting much from the Barbour Nimbus Boot in terms of comfort because of its rubber construction and Wellington style. You can imagine my surprise when I wore this boot and found out how comfy it actually was! Of course, I can’t compare it to the comfort level that’s offered by generously cushioned work boots that use innovative technology, but I still consider this boot to be a winner nonetheless, as far as comfort is concerned. The rubber is completely elastic, so I didn’t encounter any problems with mobility. The material followed my foot’s movements, quickly adapting to the flexing action of every step so I was able to walk freely without being restricted by the rigidity that can often be experienced when using rubber Wellingtons. The enhanced elasticity also meant that the material didn’t dig in painfully into my skin, making it much easier to walk even for extended periods, as the rubber instantly bent to follow my foot’s movements. The Chelsea-inspired design allowed my foot to effortlessly slip in, so I didn’t need to spend too much effort on this task with each use.
I liked the elasticized insert that worked to enlarge the opening as needed, making the boot on and off even easier and more comfortable as the boot opened more fully – which, I believe, will work even better for large or wide foot anatomies.
What impressed me more with this boot is that it’s built with a cotton lining, providing an extra layer of comfort that I wasn’t expecting with a rubberboot
This lining hugged my foot with a pleasant softness, protecting my skin from rubbing painfully against the rubber interior to prevent blisters from forming, which will eventually happen when there’s continuous friction. The interior feels spacious and doesn’t cause a locked-in feeling, further increasing the comfortable feeling when walking and doing light chores outdoors.
Weight
This boot isn’t that heavy, especially compared to taller Wellington boots. I used this for extended periods and it didn’t drag uncomfortably on my foot. The comparatively reduced weight profile is aided by the shorter ankle height that falls just on top of the ankle area. While it can’t be considered extremely lightweight, it’s still much lighter and more comfortable to wear than most boots made of thick, inflexible rubber materials.
Traction
I’m very impressed with this boot’s rubber outsole. Walking over muddy ground and slippery terrains didn’t pose any problems with the high-traction outsole delivering an excellent grip, giving me the confidence to walk at a normal pace over tricky surfaces without compromising my balance. This outstanding level of traction is similar to that of a hiking boot, making this Wellington a superb choice for tackling challenging outdoor environments with ground conditions that may otherwise cause slipping accidents.
Fit and Sizing
The Nimbus boot comes with a loose fit, providing plenty of space for my foot to shift inside so it didn’t feel like it was forced into an extremely tight space. This roominess was a treat for my toes as well, enabling them to freely wiggle to stop foot cramping, especially when I’d spent more than enough time on my feet. This loose fit also has its downside, though, as it doesn’t lock the ankle in place, increasing the likelihood of accidental twisting when going over unstable ground conditions while walking quickly at the same time. With this loosened fit, there’s also the possibility of blisters forming as a result of the foot sliding uncontrollably inside the boot. As the boot doesn’t lock the foot in place, I concluded that it’s best for walking only for short periods to avoid discomfort and/or safety issues arising from the unsecured, loose fit.
Waterproofing
I found that this boot’s vulcanized rubber material completely blocks mud, rain, and other liquid substances, keeping my foot dry throughout the time I was exposed to these sources of extreme moisture. This exceptional waterproofing made me confident enough to walk through wet terrains and muddy surface conditions without worrying that the water would eventually seep into the boot. I also felt that the boot had the perfect height to prevent water from spilling in from the top, allowing me to wade in a few inches of water or muck without fearing for my foot’s dryness and safety.
Breathability
This boot isn’t the most breathable choice because the rubber upper doesn’t allow a lot of air to get in.
However, the gusseted panels on both sides of the boot opening allow some air to seep in, generating enough air circulation to stop overheating as the moisture and warmth are dispersed before having the chance to build up. The ankle height also allows some air to come in from the top to help with the airflow inside the boot.
Quality and Durability
I discovered that the Barbour Nimbus Boot showcases the most important features that you’d normally look for in a great garden boot – and it’s superbly comfortable as well. It reminded me of the Muck Boot Muckster II Ankle Boot but this one had a more solid-feeling sole and much better traction. The vulcanized rubber upper gave me the confidence to enjoy my outdoor activities without worrying about my foot’s dryness, providing complete waterproofing action that stopped the water and other liquids from entering the boot. Without the threat of liquid penetration, I was able to continue with my tasks with full confidence – even for extended periods in areas surrounded by wet elements.
I fully expected this boot to feel heavy and uncomfortable, but I was very glad to be proven wrong. The boot turned out to be lighter than other rubber boots mainly because of its shorter height, resulting in comfortable use even for prolonged periods since the boot didn’t weigh heavily on the leg and foot muscles.

The Barbour logo is prominently displayed at the top of the boot, showcasing the British brand’s pride with more than a century’s worth of experience. The loose fit created a roomy interior, accommodating my foot in a comfortable way that allowed a bit of movement to ease the strain of staying upright for long periods. This fit also enabled comfortable toe wiggling to stop foot cramps from developing with uninterrupted boot-wearing. I appreciated the twin gussets on top that easily stretched to adjust accordingly, making it easier for me to slide my foot in without the hassle and discomfort that’s often experienced when pulling a stiff rubber boot on or off. The cotton lining offered increased comfort from within, working to form a barrier between my skin and the rubber interior to stop painful friction that can result from nonstop walking.
I especially liked the extremely grippy feel of the rubber outsole, biting strongly into the ground with excellent traction to increase my stability while walking on uneven or slippery surface conditions.
However, this boot doesn’t keep the ankle locked in, so the foot can slide from time to time inside the boot, increasing the risk of blister formation or ankle-twisting, especially when crossing inclined or unstable terrains.
