Performance Analysis

Comfort

I was expecting the Birkenstock Boston Clog to be as comfortable as the Tokio clog from the same brand because both had the same general appearance. However, I was happy that I got more than what I first expected when it comes to comfort. This clog turned out to be a bit comfier than the Tokio, with a few tweaks working to make it even more pleasurable to use. The premium leather had nice pliability, allowing it to flex immediately to accommodate my steps. This resulted in comfortable, almost effortless walking since the upper didn’t have the stiffness that would’ve restricted my movements. Instead of biting into my skin, the leather sort of flowed along with my foot’s actions, enabling me to walk pain-free and without an awkward feeling. The absence of a back strap (just like the one fitted into the Tokio clog) also contributed to the Boston clog’s comfort level because it allowed my foot to move naturally, without the strap digging into me with every step. The result was a freer feeling while walking around, with my foot allowed to move without extra components to hamper my mobility.

I liked the cork-latex footbed that’s constructed to follow the foot’s shape because it gradually brought on a customized feel as time passed.

The structure molded to my foot’s contours the more I used the clog, further increasing the comfortable feeling at the same time enhancing stability. The strong arch support ensured that my foot was always in proper alignment, preventing problems with fallen arches so I was saved from experiencing a great deal of pain when I needed to stay on my feet for a long time. The curved footbed also made it possible for me to walk stably, as my foot was secured in place inside the clog, promoting lasting comfort without any compromise when it comes to safety. I welcomed the deepness of the heel cup because it kept my heel in its proper position not only to improve comfort but also to prevent it from sliding uncontrollably inside the clog. This delivered a more stable walking experience and protected my heel from rubbing painfully against an unwelcoming material.

I loved the suede footbed lining that offered welcoming softness, delivering a soothing sensation that kept my skin safe from becoming painfully chafed even when I walked for hours at a time.

The footbed was designed with a raised toe bar to promote the foot’s natural gripping action for better circulation and to stimulate the leg muscles while walking. I enjoyed walking with these clogs even more because of the flexible sole that didn’t limit my foot’s action. The sole easily flexed to adjust to my steps, so I was able to walk freely without unwelcome rigidity underfoot. The sole also worked to cushion my steps, protecting my foot from pain while I walked for hours on concrete floors and other unforgivingly hard surfaces.

Weight

I liked this clog’s considerably lighter construction compared to the chunkier Birkenstock clogs I previously tried. The smooth leather upper and EVA sole both had lightweight profiles, so they didn’t add a great amount of bulk to the clog’s total weight. This relative lightness made walking much easier and comfier because there wasn’t excess heft to pull the foot down, especially with long hours of clog use.

Image

Traction

At first glance, this clog seemed to have the same sole structure as the Tokio clog. However, I discovered that this wasn’t true when I got to use the Boston clog, which turned out to have less.

Fit and Sizing

I liked the way this clog fit as it snuggled my foot in complete comfort to maintain stability while walking. This snug fit didn’t feel too tight, so it didn’t bring discomfort and still left enough space for my foot to shift a bit from time to time, so cramping didn’t have a chance to develop. Unlike the Tokio clog, this one didn’t have a back strap, so I won’t recommend it for people who prefer their clog to be secured in place. However, the absence of a strap at the back also offered benefits, as it made me feel like I was walking more freely without the restrictive feeling that a back strap can bring. The clog’s fit can still be adjusted though, courtesy of the metal buckle that’s integrated into the upper. This buckle was easily tightened or loosened, so it was quite easy for me to get the right fit, ensuring that the clog remained secure around my foot without compromising a comfortable experience.

Image

Waterproofing

This isn’t a waterproof clog, so it’s not the best choice for those who are after maximum foot protection against wetness. The open back and spaces around the buckles will easily let liquids in and won’t keep the foot safe from becoming soaked in wet environments. However, the leather upper does offer a limited level of water resistance in case the clog is exposed to small amounts of liquid, such as when drinks are accidentally spilled on the leather upper.

Image

Breathability

The leather upper has a breathable structure that helped keep the clog’s interior cool for longer. It allowed the air to circulate so that the clog didn’t easily overheat even when I used it in humid or hot surroundings. This breathability made the clog more comfortable and prevented sweat from pooling inside after long hours of use.

Quality and Durability

I initially admired the Birkenstock Boston Clog because of its classic profile, but I was even more impressed with how it performed when I got to use it for different purposes.

It had a more discreet silhouette compared to the chunky shape that clogs are known for, so I was able to maximize its benefits in more settings because I wasn’t limited by the clog’s appearance. Its functional benefits were ideal for work and leisure activities, with the clog silhouette bringing an easygoing vibe that works well with laidback ensembles. On the other hand, the smooth leather and more streamlined shape made the clog stylish enough to be paired with smart-casual outfits, and I didn’t worry that it would look out of place with my clothing choices. The leather upper moved along with my steps, easily flexing to keep up with my foot’s actions so walking was made more comfortable without rigid materials digging in painfully throughout the clog.

I appreciated the addition of a metal buckle on top because it added a nice accent on the leather upper and made it more interesting to look at compared to all-leather or rubber clogs.

This sophisticated touch also had a functional advantage because I got to use it to modify the clog, tightening or loosening it as needed so I conveniently achieved the perfect fit. This clog didn’t come with the back strap that was fitted into the Tokio clog (which almost looked like this clog’s twin), but this absence resulted in a more comfortable experience because my foot was able to move more freely. I fully enjoyed the cork-latex footbed’s wonderful benefits as I used the clog extensively, with the curved structure delivering much-needed arch support that kept me walking pain-free for longer. This footbed sustained my foot’s properly aligned position for prolonged comfort and increased stability while navigating different surface conditions.

I especially liked the deep heel cup that cradled my heel securely in place, holding it steady and enabling me to walk without my foot sliding unintentionally inside the clog.

This heel cup also helped maintain my balanced footing even on varying floor surfaces. The raised toe bar was another welcome enhancement to the footbed, working to exercise the foot and stimulate improved circulation while promoting the toes’ natural gripping power. The suede footbed lining provided all-day softness that soothed my skin to keep it from rubbing painfully against the clog’s interior, especially with hours of continuous walking. I’m glad the upper was built using breathable leather that encouraged good air circulation throughout the clog, so overheating didn’t become a problem even with prolonged footwear use. I felt the EVA sole working underfoot to deliver continuous cushioning to prevent discomfort while also absorbing most of the shock, making it easier to ward off foot fatigue after extended periods of staying upright. The outsole delivered strong traction and helped me walk with confidence over various surfaces without easily losing my balanced gait. The durable construction and premium design work together to deliver superior form and function that I’ll be able to take advantage of for a long time. This clog is more expensive than other clogs that are used for both work and play – but after using it and appreciating its remarkable features, I’m convinced that the higher price point is more than justified.

Other Versions

The Birkenstock Boston Clog in natural leather is offered in black, blue, and dark brown. It also comes in a version with a soft footbed, a vegan option that’s made with the Birkibuc synthetic material, a shearling-lined option, and a Super Grip version with an anti-slip rubber outsole.

The Challengers

Crocs LiteRide Clog

The Crocs LiteRide Clog is made with the proprietary Croslite material that delivers superior durability without excessive weight. It’s designed to mold to the foot’s shape, delivering increased comfort with enough flexibility to allow unhampered movements. With this clog, there’s no need for a break-in period as it feels incredibly pliable and soft out of the box, ready to be enjoyed most comfortably.  The sporty silhouette blends in well with casual outfits but is still sleek enough to pair nicely with kitchen uniforms and other workwear options in non-formal settings. The LiteRide foam sole offers remarkable softness, cushioning the foot from the pain that can be caused by standing or walking on hard surfaces for hours at a time. The perforated upper lets in plenty of air to combat overheating, dissipating excess warmth and moisture so that the interior can stay cool and fresh for longer – even in hot or humid environments. The lightweight construction is great for all-day walking, as it doesn’t weigh down the foot with an uncomfortable feeling. However, the outsole isn’t slip-resistant, so it isn’t the most suitable choice for extremely slippery settings.

Anthony Veer Eros Mule

The Anthony Veer Eros Mule is built with calfskin leather for a sleek look that can be maximized for work and leisure, adding a bit of class to even the simplest attire choices. The buckle adds a welcome shine and a bold element to the upper, making it look more striking compared to plain leather footwear. The footbed has ample padding to soften the blow of walking on hard surfaces, keeping the foot comfortable for much longer. The leather lining makes the footbed much comfier, supporting the foot with a welcoming texture that also works to stop blisters from forming with hours of continuous use. This lining helps keep the interior well-ventilated, promoting a cool feeling for longer as the air is allowed to circulate so overheating can be prevented from building up. The EVA outsole is very flexible and accommodates the foot’s motion without restricting mobility in any way. It serves as the mule’s shock absorber and prevents foot fatigue from developing with prolonged use. This mule isn’t waterproof, though, so it’s not recommended for exceptionally wet surroundings.

Merrell Juno Clog

The Merrell Juno Clog is built with a synthetic upper that moves along with the foot’s movements for unrestricted mobility. It comes with a footbed that’s soft enough to prevent blisters from forming over the course of a hectic day to prolong foot comfort. The COMFORTBASE ACTIVE footbed is shaped to follow the foot’s natural curves, delivering a customized level of comfort and continuous arch support for pain-free walking and standing. This footbed is lined with faux fur that provides remarkable softness, enveloping the foot with a soothing texture to ward off the pain that can be caused by hours of staying upright or moving around. The EVA midsole works to cushion the foot against the force that’s produced by walking on unyielding surfaces, preventing foot fatigue without the unwelcome bulk to maintain a lightweight profile. The rubber outsole offers a strong grip, sustaining stable movements over various ground conditions without compromising safety and comfort. However, this clog isn’t made for warm environments, as the faux fur lining keeps the interior continuously warm.

Chaco Paonia Clog

The Chaco Paonia Clog has a waterproof suede construction that seals out liquids, ensuring lasting foot dryness and comfort when it’s used in wet environments. The suede upper moves along with the foot’s motion so walking is made more comfortable, as there are no rigid components pressing down on the foot. The polyester webbing on the upper is fitted with a ladder lock buckle to make fit adjustments a lot easier to manage, allowing you to modify the clog until you achieve the fit that feels most comfortable and secure. The fabric lining embraces the foot with a soothing softness and protects the skin from developing blisters when you’ve been on your feet the whole day. The non-marking rubber outsole grips surfaces firmly, allowing you to navigate tricky surface conditions without losing your balance. This clog feels a bit tight at first, but the fit eventually improves with regular use.

FitFlop Shuv Leather Clog

The FitFlop Shuv Leather Clog is constructed out of a single piece of leather for a streamlined look that fits in with a wide variety of outfits. The minimalist design can keep up with professional settings but is stylish enough to seamlessly work with laidback environments and outfits as well. The patent-pending Microwobbleboard midsole works as the clog’s shock absorber to dissipate the force that results from hours of walking or staying upright. It’s also designed to dissipate the pressure underfoot for more comfortable walking for longer. The leather lining soothes the skin with remarkable softness, protecting it from rubbing painfully against the clog’s interior. The slip-resistant rubber outsole offers lasting durability and strong traction for a safer walking experience across different surface conditions. However, this is an expensive clog, so it’s not recommended for those looking for affordable choices.

Conclusion & Verdict

I’ll recommend the Birkenstock Boston Clog for anyone looking for premium-quality leather clogs. I liked the freedom of movement that the clog delivered, as it was constructed without the back strap that’s often found in other clogs. This exceptionally comfortable clog has a lightweight profile and offers a snug fit for increased stability while walking. It’s quite expensive, though, making it unsuitable for people who are on a tight budget. It’s also not slip-resistant, so it won’t provide superior protection from slipping on challenging ground conditions.
