Summary

Working in challenging outdoor conditions, especially in bad weather, can be a lot easier when you have the Merrell MQC 2 Thermo GORE-TEX Boot to rely on. I had the chance to put this boot to the test while on duty and I’m quite happy with the way it performed. The waterproof suede sections in the upper stopped water and other liquids from entering, but I was even more impressed with the GORE-TEX lining that made a remarkable difference, providing outstanding waterproofing that effectively sealed out moisture sources to keep my foot dry even in exceptionally wet conditions. The abrasion-resistant panels strengthened the upper’s structure, giving it the reinforcement that it needed to endure heavy use in challenging settings without easily getting damaged when the boot was exposed to abrasive objects and other threats. I liked the low-profile insulation that worked to regulate the temperature inside the boot, maintaining a welcoming warmth that surrounded my foot, so it didn’t feel uncomfortably chilled when I needed to work in cold areas for long periods.

Image

What amazed me about this insulation is the way it provided much-needed warmth without making the interior feel too bulky the way thickly insulated boots tend to. I appreciated the fact that aside from this low-key insulation, the area over the toe wasn’t neglected, as this was also insulated to retain warmth. With all the insulation components in place, I was glad that the boot maintained a very lightweight structure, making it easier for me to walk for hours comfortably because I didn’t need to carry around bulky footwear. I liked the way the contoured insole supported my foot with enough cushioning to keep pain at bay, while the slightly foamy feel at the heel worked to absorb most of the impact coming from continuous walking on hard surfaces. The breathable lining helped promote good air circulation, so I didn’t need to worry about getting hot, sweaty feet in humid conditions. The sole had a good grip on different surfaces, allowing me to walk safely without losing my footing. This boot was a bit difficult to pull on, though, although the pull tab helped a bit and made the task more convenient. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the boot’s components to check which ones stand out the most and what aspects may need to be tweaked to increase the footwear’s functional benefits.

When you need your footwear to be as tough as the outdoor environments you’re working in, this boot achieves the desired results and more.

Ideal For

  • People who prefer a snug-fitting tactical boot
  • Environments that require waterproof, insulated boots
  • Those who are after very lightweight footwear for tactical and outdoor activities

Performance Analysis

Comfort

I was quite happy with the way the Merrell MQC 2 Thermo GORE-TEX Boot didn’t sacrifice comfort while delivering superior protection against the elements. When I learned that it had 400 grams of insulation, I was expecting I’d need to squeeze my foot into an extremely tight interior – but I was relieved that this wasn’t what I experienced. The low-profile insulation didn’t feel as bulky as the other materials I’ve come across with insulated boots, preventing the interior from becoming unbearably tight so my foot was still able to flex naturally for comfortable walking. The boot’s interior maintained a cozy warmth, efficiently keeping my foot comfy so it didn’t feel painfully chilled while I was working in low-temperature conditions for extended periods.

I was impressed that the toe area wasn’t left out when it comes to insulation, with 4mm-thick Primaloft Aerogel insulation incorporated into this zone, ensuring that my toes got the same toasty warmth. I liked how the upper’s structure easily accommodated my steps, with the suede and abrasion-resistant materials offering enough pliability to keep me walking almost effortlessly, without the pain that comes when rigid materials bite into the skin with every movement.

The COMFORTBASE insole was molded to follow the foot’s shape, cradling it to keep it supported in its proper position, so I didn’t need to worry about my steps becoming unstable, especially when I needed to move quickly over tricky surfaces. This contoured insole offered good cushioning that helped keep my foot comfortable by protecting it from feeling the extreme hardness of concrete floors and other unforgiving surfaces that I needed to walk on. I welcomed how the proprietary Air Cushion Viz technology worked to give the heel area a foamy feel, increasing my comfort with a slight bounce that returned the energy to my steps. This area absorbed the force that was produced by walking on unyielding surfaces, ensuring that the impact was spread throughout the boot to stop foot fatigue, especially when I’d been on my feet for hours. I enjoyed the stable feeling that was enhanced by the EVA foam midsole, delivering continuous support and additional cushioning underneath to ensure a comfortable walking experience that didn’t compromise my stability while going over rough or unstable terrains. There was a nylon shank that offered another layer of support underfoot, promoting reliable stability that kept me walking confidently over various ground conditions without worrying too much that I’d lose my stable footing.

Even with all these comfort features in place, I noticed that this boot still had a slightly flat feeling underneath, which was probably due to the lack of generous cushioning in the sole area.

However, this flat feeling didn’t make the boot totally uncomfortable.

Weight

This boot stands out with its exceptionally lightweight construction. I assumed that it would feel much heavier when I learned that it had insulation materials built in, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover just how lightweight this boot was when I got the chance to finally use it. The upper that’s made with suede and abrasion-resistant material isn’t as heavy as leather, helping to keep the boot’s weight minimized.  Even the sole wasn’t too thick, so it also didn’t contribute a lot to the total weight of the footwear. This boot’s very lightweight profile fits the bill for those who are after tactical boots that don’t weigh the feet down with extreme bulk.

Image

Traction

I enjoyed a stable walking experience while using this boot, with the exclusive Merrell sticky rubber material giving the outsole the ability to get a good grip on different surfaces. Walking was made easier because I didn’t worry too much that I’d easily slip when I walked quickly over various ground conditions. It’s worth noting, though, that the level of traction that this boot offers may not be as strong as other tactical boots – such as the Moab series – so it’s not the best choice for extremely slippery or unstable terrains.

Image

Fit and Sizing

This is a true-to-size boot – I went for a size 10 and it fit comfortably, so I didn’t need to upsize or downsize. The snug fit increased the secure feeling, as it kept my foot in a stable position inside, preventing it from unintentional sliding that could’ve led to ankle-twisting, especially with rapid walking on uneven surfaces. This snug fit, however, isn’t ideal for those with wide feet or for people who are comfortable wearing more spacious footwear. I noticed that this boot was slightly difficult to put on because of the way it’s built – it immediately locked in my foot upon entry, making it quite challenging to maneuver all the way in without exerting more effort. The addition of a pull loop at the back of the opening helped a bit, though, making this task a bit more convenient to deal with.

Image

Waterproofing

I liked the security that this boot offered when it came to waterproofing. The waterproof suede material used in the upper stopped mud, rain, and other liquids from getting in when I was in wet environments. What made a remarkable difference, however, was the GORE-TEX lining, delivering maximum waterproofing to ensure that moisture sources wouldn’t have a chance to penetrate. My foot enjoyed a dry, comfortable environment even when I needed to stay in extremely wet settings for prolonged periods, thanks to the boot’s waterproof components.

Image

Breathability

I’m glad that even with its extended height, this boot didn’t become too warm, even with continuous use for hours. This is thanks to the mesh lining that encouraged air to circulate more freely, helping moisture and excess warmth to evaporate before these could accumulate and develop into an overheated boot interior. The abrasion-resistant panels also allowed a bit of air to get in to stop the interior from becoming excessively warm, especially when the environment became warmer as the hours went by. It should also be mentioned that even the waterproof GORE-TEX membrane has a breathable structure that promotes continuous airflow, ensuring that the interior will stay properly ventilated even with all-day boot use.

Quality and Durability

I got the chance to test the Merrell MQC 2 Thermo GORE-TEX Boot’s performance in different settings and I wasn’t disappointed with my experience. The waterproof suede that’s used in the upper formed a protective shell around the footwear, guarding it against liquids so they didn’t have a chance to get in. I was even more impressed with the GORE-TEX lining, as it delivered outstanding protection in extremely wet environments, blocking wet elements so my foot enjoyed continuous dryness regardless of how long I stayed in areas that were constantly exposed to moisture sources. Aside from providing maximum protection against wetness, this membrane also offered increased breathability, promoting a properly ventilated interior that prevented the boot from becoming overheated even with extended use in humid or hot conditions. The abrasion-resistant upper increased the strength of the upper, making the boot strong enough to survive being used heavily in tough conditions.

I appreciated how the tough material protects the boot against structural damage, especially when there’s exposure to abrasive items and other objects that can threaten the boot’s durability in harsh settings.

The bellows tongue construction closed the gaps between the tongue and the upper, ensuring that debris didn’t have any space to enter the boot, so I was able to work in various outdoor environments without unwanted elements accidentally getting in and causing foot discomfort.

I liked the thick laces that looked strong enough to resist damage even with heavy use, assuring me that I’d be able to rely on these components for long-term use without worrying that they’d fray easily.

The metallic hardware is the same color as the materials used in the upper, maintaining the boot’s streamlined look while also offering lasting durability to keep up with numerous lace adjustments. I was impressed with the way the insulation material worked to sustain the boot interior’s comfortable warmth in cold environments while keeping a low-profile structure. This low-bulk material wasn’t as thick as other insulation materials, so the interior didn’t feel too bulky and tight. I appreciated the presence of insulation over the toe area, as it ensured that my toes were also kept warm and comfy when I was in low-temperature settings. The contoured insole offered enough cushioning to defend against the pain of walking on hard surfaces while providing a supportive base all day long. I liked the heel with its Air Cushion Viz that created a foamy sensation, absorbing the shock that resulted from hours of nonstop walking to protect my muscles from becoming fatigued. The sticky rubber outsole delivered ample traction, enabling me to maintain my stable footing so I was able to safely walk over various surfaces. This boot has a remarkably lightweight structure that doesn’t weigh the foot down, making it a superb choice for long hours of continuous walking, as it doesn’t drag uncomfortably on the foot.

I just have to mention that it’s quite pricey, though. It can also be a bit difficult to put on, as it immediately locks the foot in, so it may not be the best option if you prefer a tactical boot that you can quickly put on and remove.

The Challengers

Bates GX-8 Side-Zip Gore-Tex Boot

The Bates GX-8 Side-Zip Gore-Tex Boot features GORE-TEX waterproofing that seals out wet elements, stopping them from seeping in to ensure long-lasting foot dryness when you’re in exceedingly wet environments. This lining comes with a breathable structure, permitting the entry of plenty of air to keep the interior feeling as cool as possible for a long time while also encouraging moisture and heat to evaporate to stop overheating. The side zipper provides a more convenient way of wearing the boot, removing the need to knot and untie the shoelaces with every use. The nylon panels protect the boot against premature structural damage, especially when it’s constantly exposed to abrasive objects and other safety hazards in the surrounding area. The cushioned insole offers enough softness to cradle the foot, creating a welcoming platform that prevents discomfort even with long hours of nonstop boot use. The EVA provides extra cushioning and support, increasing the stable feeling to help you walk on different surface conditions without compromising your steady footing. The cement construction, along with the low-profile EVA midsole, results in a flexible and lightweight boot that’ll feel comfortable for all-day walking or standing, since it won’t weigh the foot down. It’s worth mentioning that this is quite difficult to put on, though, as its design instantly locks the foot in place once it enters the boot.

Under Armour Micro G Valsetz

The Under Armour Micro G Valsetz Leather Waterproof Tactical Boot showcases a comfortably cushioned interior, cradling the foot with a foamy sensation to ward off the pain that can come from staying upright on hard surfaces for long hours at a time. The waterproof full-grain leather stops liquids from entering and creates a streamlined profile that’s equally stylish and rugged, offering enough versatility that can be maximized in different settings. The waterproof lining further enhances the water protection, preventing wet elements from seeping in to keep your foot sheltered from excessive moisture. The Contoura Support footbed absorbs most of the impact coming from walking for hours, preventing foot fatigue by spreading the shock across the boot so it won’t be concentrated solely on the heel area. The footbed’s anti-odor quality ensures that you can easily avoid sweaty and stinky feet issues even when you’ve been wearing the boot for the entire shift. The TPU toe cap guards the tip of the boot against scratches and other visible signs of damage with exposure to abrasive materials, at the same time promoting comfortable kneeling as the flexible enhancement bends with the foot’s movements. There’s just some concern that the plastic lace hooks may negatively affect the boot’s long-term strength, especially with heavy use in harsh surroundings.

Skechers Work Wascana Benen Boot

The Skechers Work Wascana Benen Boot is built with a seam-sealed design that offers strong waterproofing, keeping the foot protected inside so it won’t easily get soaked if you’re exposed to extreme moisture sources. The smooth leather upper can be polished to a high shine, making it easier for you to transition from your duty out on the field to more formal indoor settings without too much fuss involved in making the footwear presentable. The memory foam insole offers ample cushioning, conforming to the foot’s curves for customized comfort while also preventing blisters from forming by easing the foot’s pressure zones. The electrical hazard safe design offers a secondary level of safety against electric shock in case you’re accidentally exposed to electrically charged items in dry conditions. The relaxed fit design leaves enough room inside the boot to allow the toes to wiggle freely, preventing toe cramping, especially when you spend the better part of the day on your feet. However, the sole doesn’t look as sturdy as thicker rubber soles, and as a result, may not last as long.

Irish Setter Big Game Hunt VAPRTREK Boot’s

The Irish Setter Big Game Hunt VAPRTREK Boot’s upper is constructed with full-grain leather along with the ArmaTec XT that offers superb abrasion resistance, reinforcing the boot to maintain its durability, especially when used in harsh environments where there may be abrasive materials all around. The high-rebound material fitted into the sole delivers a welcome bounce, returning the energy to your steps to keep you walking comfortably for much longer. The UltraDry waterproof membrane stops water and other liquids from penetrating the boot, promoting lasting foot dryness when you’re in wet settings for long periods. The proprietary ScentBan scent control technology enhances the various materials throughout the footwear, inhibiting bacterial growth to stop the development of bad odors even with all-day boot use. The exclusive CuShin Comfort technology keeps the tongue area sufficiently cushioned so it won’t bite into the shin, eliminating the intense pressure that can cause a great deal of pain when walking. This boot is offered in camo colors only, though, so it’s not the most practical choice for those who need plain-colored tactical or hiking boots.

Original SWAT Alpha Fury Boot’s

The Original SWAT Alpha Fury Boot’s upper features a combination of polyester mesh and microfiber PU for flexible performance that won’t hamper your movements in any way, allowing you to enjoy natural mobility during the most crucial moments of your shift. The upper also allows plenty of air to come in, maintaining good ventilation to keep the interior feeling cool and fresh for longer as it also encourages heat and moisture to quickly evaporate. The EVA midsole works for continuous shock absorption to stop foot fatigue from developing when you stay on your feet for hours. The gusseted tongue seals out the gaps on the upper so debris won’t have a chance to come in. The airport-friendly construction consists of nonmetallic components, ensuring that the boot won’t accidentally set off metal scanners. The Achilles cushion delivers stability and ample padding on the collar, helping secure the foot in place for a stable walking experience. This boot’s construction makes it quite challenging to put on, though, so it’s not the best choice if you want a boot that’s very quick to pull on.

Conclusion & Verdict

The Merrell MQC 2 Thermo GORE-TEX Boot is a great choice for those looking for insulated, waterproof boots. I loved how the GORE-TEX lining delivered excellent protection against wet elements, sealing them out to preserve the interior’s lasting dryness. The low-profile insulation maintained comfortable boot warmth in cold conditions without excessive bulk. I liked the boot’s remarkably lightweight structure, as it didn’t pull my foot down with unwelcome weight. It’s worth noting that this boot is a bit challenging to put on, though, and has a higher price compared to other tactical boots with similar features.
