Summary

The Muck Boot RHS Muckster II Shoe doesn’t stand out when it comes to aesthetics, but it certainly performs well in the settings for which it’s intended. It’s primarily made with rubber that’s flexible enough to allow my foot to move unrestricted and is convenient to pull on and remove. In addition, the rubber delivers superior waterproofing, ensuring the interior stays dry in wet conditions.

I like this shoe’s minimalist design as it’s easy to match with a wide variety of outfits and not as bulky as other gardening boots made with thick rubber.

The top cover of the footbed is enhanced with antimicrobial treatment to greatly minimize the risk of bacterial growth, which can be a problem in moist and humid environments.

I’m glad the shoe also comes with moisture management and odor control properties, assuring me of lasting foot freshness and dryness as I work throughout the day.

The shoe has quite a snug fit so that I won’t recommend it for those with wide feet.

Key Takeaways

  • The Muck Boot RHS Muckster II Shoe is built to keep up with gardening tasks and other light chores in outdoor, wet conditions. It has the distinction of being the only footwear to get the endorsement of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • The waterproof rubber section at the bottom seals out water, mud, muck, and other liquids to keep the foot dry in wet surroundings.
  • The shoe has a slip-on design that’s almost effortless to put on and remove, with a minimalist style that goes well with various outfits for work and leisure. It easily flexes along with every step for superb foot comfort and mobility.
  • The footbed features antimicrobial technology, working with moisture management and odor control to keep the foot feeling comfortably dry and fresh for much longer.
  • The shoe can feel extremely snug, so it’s best to go up half a size or full to ensure improved comfort even with prolonged use.

Ideal For

  • Gardening and light outdoor tasks
  • Wet indoor or outdoor environments
  • Those who prefer snug-fitting gardening shoes

Comfort

Image

The Muck Boot RHS Muckster II Shoe is fairly comfortable, and I especially like that I almost don’t need to exert any effort putting it on and off. This is the result of the shoe’s flexible structure, with the thin rubber moving along with my steps for even better comfort while walking.

The neoprene layer on top also contributes to the shoe’s flexibility which helps me walk more efficiently without compromising comfort.

It’s worth noting that it’s still not as flexible as most of the Crocs or Birkenstock products I’ve tried.

The neoprene section on the top adds another layer of softness, forming a barrier to protect my skin from developing blisters after walking and working on my feet for extended periods. I appreciate this neoprene layer’s ability to flex while maintaining a secure fit over the shoe’s opening to seal out debris and wetness.

The neoprene layer almost feels like a second layer of skin that comfortably follows my steps while ensuring that unwanted elements won’t come into the shoe.

I’m happy to discover that the shoe comes with a footbed with a bioDEWIX Dry antimicrobial cover, significantly reducing bacterial growth risk.

This enhancement is especially beneficial when the shoes are worn in wet surroundings for prolonged periods.

The footwear also uses NYZM to manage moisture and control odor, keeping my foot comfortably dry and feeling fresh for the better part of the day, even after hours of continuous use.

Weight

Image

I was surprised that the shoe weighed as much as it does, heavier than what I expected – much heavier than Crocs and Birkenstocks.

I’ve tried and reviewed several work shoes with the same weight or are lighter, with many more features. It’s worth noting that the additional weight doesn’t make the shoe uncomfortable and, in fact, even works to reinforce its structural strength and durability. As per the image above, we measured the Muckster 2 low shoes ourselves, and their weight is approximately 1077 grams / 2.37 lbs / 38 oz.

Traction

Image

The rubber outsole comes with a distinctive sphere pattern offering a good grip.

I can confidently use this shoe for gardening and other outdoor activities without slipping.

The shoe also feels grippy enough to stabilize my footing on wet surfaces.

However, without large treads and superior slip resistance, I don’t think the shoe can still sustain my stability in extremely slippery or uneven ground conditions.

Fit and Sizing

Image

This shoe is true to size and can feel too snug.

It’s offered in half-size options, and I recommend those who wear half-sizes order up.

Getting one whole size up will result in a more relaxed and comfortable fit. However, this may affect the foot’s stability, especially when walking quickly over challenging surfaces.

Waterproofing

Image

The shoe offers superior waterproofing courtesy of the rubber bottom portion. However, the liquid resistance is only until the top of the rubber section because the neoprene layer on top isn’t waterproof. In addition, it’s worth noting that since the shoe isn’t as tall as boots, it isn’t suitable for walking in deep mud or puddles because the wetness will quickly get in.

Breathability

Image

I like the breathable lining added to the shoe’s interior, enhancing the fresh and dry feeling for longer.

The lining welcomes a lot of air for continuous ventilation, which also helps sweat and built-up warmth to dissipate quickly.

Quality and Durability

Image

The Muck Boot RHS Muckster II Shoe has a streamlined design that blends in with various outfits while performing remarkably well for gardening and similar outdoor activities.

I liked how the black rubber delivers a sleek look, while the neoprene layer and pull tab on top provide a nice color contrast. The blend of materials makes the shoe flexible and quite easy to pull on, especially with the help of the pull tab for added convenience.

It’s worth mentioning that the shoe is the only gardening footwear to be given an endorsement by the Royal Horticultural Society.

I was impressed with the waterproofing from the rubber section at the bottom, sealing out the liquids I encounter while working in the garden and other wet conditions.

However, the liquid resistance reaches only up to the top edge of the rubber component since the neoprene layer on top isn’t waterproof.

I appreciate this neoprene section, as it makes the shoe comfortably flexible for better mobility. It also molds to the top of my foot, preventing debris and other unwelcome elements from getting in.

The footbed cover uses the power of bioDEWIX Dry antimicrobial enhancement to stop the growth of bacteria, which is a risk when working in wet and humid environments for long periods.

I especially like the NYZM treatment that controls moisture and odor, helping maintain a fresh and dry environment for my foot to enjoy throughout the day.

The insole is removable, so it’s much easier to clean and maintain to sustain good foot hygiene.

The outsole has an interesting pattern of small spheres for treads, giving ample traction to keep up with gardening tasks and other light activities outdoors and on wet surfaces.

I don’t think the outsole is slip-resistant, though, so it may not feel as grippy in severely slippery or uneven ground conditions. This flexible shoe comfortably moves with each step but is not as lightweight or flexible as most Birkenstocks or Crocs.

The fit is also quite snug so it may be uncomfortable for those with wide feet.

Other Versions

The Muck Boot RHS Muckster II Shoe is black (rubber) and greenish brown (neoprene) colorway. A short boots version of these shoes, is the Muckster Ankle height garden boots – which we have also worn and evaluated in detail.

The Challengers

Crocs Classic All Terrain Clog

Image

The Crocs Classic All Terrain Clog has a lightweight structure that can be used all day without dragging on the foot with a bulky feel. It’s exceptionally flexible, enabling the foot to move unrestrictedly for improved comfort and agility. The heel strap is adjustable and can be worn at the back or on top of the foot, offering more ways for the user to maximize the clog’s use. The outsole has rugged lugs that strongly grip tricky surfaces, so it’s easier to maintain a stable gait. This clog can be jazzed up with Jibbitz charms for those who prefer to customize their footwear. The ventilation ports allow moisture and heat to escape throughout the day, preventing overheating and excessive sweating. However, these holes also allow liquids to enter the footwear immediately, so it can’t protect the foot against uncomfortable soaking in wet environments.

Birkenstock A630 Clog

Image

The Birkenstock A630 Clog has a water-repellent PU body that effectively stops liquids from getting in quickly, keeping the foot dry in wet surroundings. The material is resistant to dirt and is easy to clean, so it retains its high-quality appearance and function for a long time. It also delivers excellent arch support to keep the foot comfortable through long hours of walking and standing on the job. The PU outsole has outstanding slip resistance, strongly gripping even the most challenging surfaces for improved walking safety. The cork-latex footbed is designed to follow the foot’s natural shape, offering superior support and comfort that can be enjoyed throughout the busiest workdays. This footbed can be removed and washed separately, making it easier to sustain its cleanliness even after heavy use. However, this footbed is quite rigid and may get in the way of some foot movements.

Ariat Terrain Ease Waterproof Shoe

Image

The Ariat Terrain Ease Waterproof Shoe’s lace-free style offers superb convenience as it can be pulled on and off easily. It uses the exclusive Waterproof PRO construction to block mud, rain, and other liquids, ensuring the foot’s comfortable dryness throughout the exposure to moisture sources. The well-cushioned insole helps protect the foot against the impact of walking on hard ground. It works with the EVA midsole that absorbs the shock of continuous walking, with a lightweight structure that doesn’t add uncomfortable bulk. A moisture-wicking lining draws sweat away from the skin, maintaining the foot’s dryness for a fresh feeling that can last for the better part of the day. The durable Duratread outsole has a heel that firmly grips stirrups and ladder rungs for increased safety. However, this outsole has limited traction, which may not prevent slipping on tricky surfaces.

Skechers Work Bronwood Shoe

Image

The Skechers Work Bronwood Shoe has a water-repellent upper to keep the foot dry in wet outdoor or indoor work conditions. The material is also resistant to stains, protecting the shoe from absorbing spilled liquids and other substances to ensure that the footwear maintains its superb appearance for a long time. The Skechers Memory Foam insole provides ample cushioning and relieves pressure spots, making it easier to walk and stand for long periods without aching feet. The slip-on design is much more convenient to use and much quicker to prepare than lace-up styles. In addition, the electrical hazard-safe design minimizes the threat of electric shock if there is unintentional contact with electrically energized objects in dry work settings. This lightweight shoe has a relaxed fit, allowing comfortable foot movements and toe wiggling. However, it’s not completely waterproof, so it’s not the best for extremely wet or mud terrain conditions.

Fila Memory Workshift Slip Resistant Shoe

Image

The Fila Memory Workshift Slip Resistant Shoe is durable, with the leather and synthetic upper performing well and looking good on and off the work area. The streamlined profile looks similar to athletic sneakers, so pairing the shoe with workwear and with more casual attire is easy. The slip-resistant rubber outsole has a strong grip on most surfaces, making it easy to navigate slippery and uneven ground conditions without compromising safety and efficient movements. The outsole also feels thick enough to support the foot and maintain stability throughout long hours of standing or walking. The top part feels too narrow, so the shoe starts to feel uncomfortable before long, especially for those with wide feet.

Conclusion & Verdict

The Muck Boot RHS Muckster II Shoe is a great choice for working in the garden and other light activities that may involve exposure to wetness, so I was not surprised that the Royal Horticultural Society endorses it. I appreciate its minimalist style that blends in with different attire without the unattractive bulk that’s associated with other rubber footwear. It’s well-designed and durable, featuring a waterproof rubber section to keep liquids out and maintain a comfortable, dry foot environment. I love the insole with its antimicrobial bioDEWIX treatment, working with NYZM moisture management and odor control to prolong the feeling of freshness inside the shoe. The neoprene layer adds flexibility to the shoe, although it’s still not as flexible or lightweight as most Crocs and Birkenstocks I’ve used. It should be mentioned that the shoe can feel quite tight, so I recommend upsizing it for a more comfortable experience.
